Things to do around Reading Central Serviced Apartments

Introduction

Reading sits in the heart of the Thames Valley and is part of the London commuter belt with many choosing to live outside of the capital’s hustle and bustle. Reading is also home to the headquarters of several major UK companies. The town benefits from strong road and rail links with travel on the Great Western Main Line railway and the M4 motorway. In the heart of Reading sits the Abbey Quarter, covering almost 900 years of history. This includes the gorgeous Forbury Gardens, a mere 10-minute walk from our apartments, the Grade I listed ruins of Reading Abbey and Reading Museum. Head to the award-winning Rising Sun Arts Centre for events and activities across art, cinema, dance, drama, live music and more. If you’re looking to venture into the Berkshire countryside, you’ll be spoilt for choice with superb golf courses, stately homes and the magnificent Wellington Country Park with its 350 acres of forest and nature trails. 20 minutes’ drive from Reading is Basildon Park, an 18th-century Palladian-style mansion with 400 acres of parkland to explore.

Shopping

Reading is a hugely popular shopping destination and for good reason: everything shoppers could want is conveniently on offer, from independent boutiques to major high street stores. With two big shopping centres - The Oracle and Broad Street Mall - located in the town centre, everything is within a short walking distance from our apartments. A convenient mini supermarket sits opposite to stock up on essentials and larger supermarkets are within easy reach. There are plenty of independent businesses in the centre of town too. But Is It Art is the place to go if you enjoy exploring an eclectic mix of cards, homeware and art to find a unique piece. Family-run jewellers Jacobs has been established for over 70 years and by Reading station, The Sound Machine is a treasure trove of a record shop. To the north of Reading, NOOD offers a range of eco-conscious products for you and your home. The company has a community-driven ethos, and all skincare and cleaning products are made by hand, half a mile down the road.

Food & Drink

From popular gems in the town centre to good finds on the outskirts, there are plenty of places offering all sorts of cuisines in Reading. The Oracle has an impressively wide choice of eateries and plenty of restaurants can be found close by along the river front, with al fresco dining when the weather permits. Workhouse Coffee, less than 10 minutes’ walk from our apartments, is a lovely spot to pick up a speciality, award-winning drink and delicious homemade cakes. In the heart of town, Picnic specialises in ethical coffee and locally-made food. For lunch, head to family-run Shed where you can enjoy gourmet sandwiches and soups made with locally-sourced ingredients, in a café situated in an old forge! Reading institution Sweeney & Todd has been serving up award-winning pies for decades, and at neighbourhood deli Mama’s Way founders Walter and Dario offer a range of produce and wine to help you make a fabulous Italian meal at home.

Night Life

Reading has a wide-choice of bars and pubs from cask-ale specialists to stylish bars offering fantastic champagne and wine menus. Family-run Allied Arms brings a cosy country pub feel to central Reading, with oak-beamed ceilings, stripped wood flooring and a terrace garden. Or try dog-friendly Hope and Bear – with an open fire in the winter months and a cracking beer garden, it’s a good spot year-round. Independent venue Blue Collar Corner offers draught beer from Reading brewery Double-Barrelled, cocktails, DJ sets and street food options, making it perfect for meeting friends. Milk Bar is Reading's independent purveyor of rare rums and prescribed cocktails in a relaxed setting.
